Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about unlocking your car radio.

General

What is a car radio code and why do I need one?

A car radio code (also called a radio unlock code, stereo code, or anti-theft code) is a unique 4-digit security PIN built into your vehicle's audio system. When the car battery is disconnected, replaced, goes flat, or when the radio unit is removed, the system locks automatically as an anti-theft measure. You'll see "CODE", "0000", or "LOCKED" on the display. The original code was provided in your vehicle's documentation at purchase — RadioCodeAuto retrieves this original factory code using your VIN or radio serial number.

How does RadioCodeAuto generate my radio code?

Enter your VIN or radio serial number and we find the original 4-digit code assigned to your radio at the factory. With the serial number the code appears right away; with the VIN it arrives by email, usually within a few hours.

How long does it take to receive my radio unlock code?

It depends on the method used. With the radio serial number method, the code appears instantly. With the VIN method, the code is sent to your email, usually within a few hours. Ford serial numbers (V, M, BP and TravelPilot) also give the code instantly. You'll receive your code as soon as it's ready.

What is the difference between a radio code and a PIN code?

In the context of car audio systems, "radio code", "stereo code", "unlock code", "security code", and "PIN code" all refer to the same thing — the 4-digit anti-theft code required to reactivate your car radio after a power interruption. Different manufacturers and documentation may use different terms, but the code itself works the same way regardless of what it's called.

My battery died — will I need a new radio code?

If your car battery dies completely or is disconnected, your radio will almost certainly lock and require the code to be re-entered. This happens every time the radio loses power, not just the first time. The good news is that the code never changes — it's the same factory-set code every time. Once you retrieve your code through RadioCodeAuto, save it somewhere safe (your phone, wallet, or glove compartment) so you have it ready for future battery changes.

Can a car dealer provide my radio code?

Yes, authorized dealers can look up your radio code using your VIN and vehicle documentation. However, this typically requires an in-person visit during business hours, may involve a service fee (often €20–€50 depending on the country and dealer), and can take several days if the dealer needs to request the code from the manufacturer. RadioCodeAuto provides the same code online, without needing to visit a dealership.

Finding Your Code

What is a VIN and where can I find it on my car?

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character alphanumeric code assigned to every motor vehicle at manufacturing. You can find your VIN in several locations:

• On the lower-left corner of the windshield (visible from outside the car)
• On a sticker on the driver's side door jamb
• In your vehicle registration document (V5C, carte grise, Fahrzeugschein, or equivalent)
• On your insurance documentation
• Stamped on the chassis near the engine bay

The VIN method is recommended for most Renault and Dacia vehicles, as it does not require removing the radio.

How do I find my car radio serial number?

The radio serial number is printed on a label attached to the top, side, or rear of the radio unit. To access it, you typically need to remove the radio from the dashboard using radio extraction keys (also called release keys), which are available at most auto parts stores.

On some Ford models, you can retrieve the serial number without removal by pressing and holding buttons 1 and 6 (or 2 and 6) simultaneously for several seconds — the serial will scroll across the display.

The serial number format varies by manufacturer: Renault precodes are one letter followed by three digits, while Ford serials are typically in the format M + 6 digits or V + 6 digits.

Should I use the VIN method or the serial number method?

For Renault and Dacia vehicles built after 2010, the VIN method is recommended — it doesn't require removing the radio from the dashboard. For Ford vehicles, only the serial number method is available — the VIN method does not work for Ford. If the VIN method doesn't return a result for your Renault or Dacia, you can also use the serial number as an alternative.

Do I need to remove my radio to get the unlock code?

Not necessarily. If you use the VIN method (recommended for most Renault and Dacia vehicles), you do not need to remove the radio at all — just locate your VIN on the windshield or registration document. For Ford vehicles, the serial number is required, which typically means removing the radio — but on some Ford models you can retrieve the serial by pressing button combinations on the radio itself without removal.

Supported Vehicles

Which car brands and models does RadioCodeAuto support?

RadioCodeAuto currently supports three brands:

Renault — Clio, Megane, Scenic, Captur, Twingo, Kangoo, Trafic, Master, Laguna, Espace, Kadjar, Koleos, Talisman and more
Dacia — Logan, Sandero, Duster, Lodgy, Dokker
Ford — Focus, Fiesta, Transit, Mondeo, Kuga, Fusion, C-Max, S-Max, Galaxy and more
Renault trucks: they work too, by the radio's serial number. See the question below.

Does RadioCodeAuto work for Renault trucks?

Yes. On Renault trucks (Premium, Magnum, Kerax, Midlum and the T, C, K and D ranges) the radio code comes from the radio's serial number, not from the VIN.

The serial is on the label on the radio's casing and starts with 89F. Enter it on the Renault Trucks radio code page to get the code.

Can I use RadioCodeAuto on my phone or tablet?

Yes. RadioCodeAuto is fully optimized for mobile devices, tablets, and desktop computers. You can generate your radio code directly from your phone while sitting in your car — no need to go to a computer. Simply visit radiocodeauto.com in any mobile browser, enter your VIN or serial number, and request your code.

Entering Your Code

How do I enter the radio code into my Renault or Dacia?

Step 1: Turn on the ignition and the radio. The display should show "0000" or "CODE".
Step 2: Use the preset buttons (1, 2, 3, 4) to set each digit — press each button repeatedly until the correct number appears in that position. For example, if your code is 4253, press button 1 four times to show "4" in the first position, button 2 twice to show "2", and so on.
Step 3: Once all four digits are correctly displayed, press and hold button 6 (or press the right arrow/validation button on some models) to confirm. The radio will unlock immediately if the code is correct.

How do I enter the radio code into my Ford?

For Ford 6000 CD and similar models: Turn on the radio — it will display "_ _ _ _" or "CODE". Use buttons 1 through 4 to enter each digit. Press each button the number of times equal to the digit you need (e.g., press button 1 three times to enter "3" in the first position). After entering all four digits, press and hold button 5 until the radio unlocks.

For Ford V-series radios: Enter the code with buttons 1–4 the same way, then press and hold button 5 to confirm.

My radio displays "WAIT" — what does this mean?

The "WAIT" message appears when too many incorrect code attempts have been made. This is a security lockout to prevent brute-force guessing. To resolve it:

• Leave the radio turned ON with the ignition key in the ON or accessory position
• Do NOT turn it off — this will restart the timer
• Wait 30–60 minutes
• The display will eventually return to "CODE" or "0000"

Important: turning the radio off and on again during the wait period will restart the timer from the beginning. Once "CODE" reappears, carefully enter the correct code.

What if the code provided doesn't work on my radio?

If the code doesn't unlock your radio, check these common issues:

• Verify your VIN or serial number — even one wrong digit will generate a different code
• Check your entry method — the method differs between brands and models (see our specific instructions above)
• Check for "WAIT" mode — if too many incorrect attempts were made previously, the radio may be in security lockout
• Check if the radio was replaced — if a previous owner installed a radio from a different vehicle, the original VIN won't match the current radio unit

If none of these resolve the issue, contact us at support@radiocodeauto.com with your VIN, serial number, and a photo of your radio display.
